Jubilee - Care for the Poor

rebuildlogo.jpgIn Leviticus 25, the Bible teaches about a Sabbath rest; one day a week set aside to rest and re-energise. God’s command to extend this principle of rest to the land, meant that one year out of every seven, the land was to remain untouched. The 50th year, following the 7th seven was proclaimed as a Year of Jubilee - an extra year of rest. In this year slaves were given their freedom and original landowners, who had been forced off their land because of hard times and crippling debt, experienced a debt free start as their land was returned to them.

The year of Jubilee reminded God’s people that the whole Earth belongs to Him and all provision comes from Him. It was a year of restoration and freedom. God’s extravagant and unconditional love has been expressed to us through the gift of His Son Jesus Christ. Jesus died on the cross in place of us and with his blood, completely cancelled all of our sins: a debt we could never repay. In the city of Fremantle, WA, the churches have faced many requests for help from people facing action by authorities over unpaid bills for rent, electricity, water and gas, often because of sickness of retrenchment. Ps Julie Hollett [Fremantle Jubilee] had a vision of demonstrating some of God’s love and truth to Fremantle by paying outstanding monetary debts for households at Easter time. The churches and businesses combined to work with the authorities and the city council to apply the Biblical concept of Jubilee in the Fremantle area to reveal the extravagant and unconditional love of God. Well over $100,000 was raised to pay the debts of several hundred families in the week before Easter 2003. The Churches of Fremantle and other community leaders are praying for a changed city - a city where all people are prospering under the blessing of God, living full lives in Godly order, with peace and freedom.
